Some appointments add experience. Others help define an entire field. Dr. Jain’s appointment brings one of biometrics’ most influential scientific voices to ROC — and reinforces a research lineage that continues to shape how identity intelligence is put into practice.

A Full-Circle Moment for ROC

ROC is proud to welcome Dr. Anil K. Jain to its Board of Directors. For more than five decades, he has helped define the science behind pattern recognition, computer vision, and biometrics. Today, his research continues to inform how the world recognizes people, protects identity, and builds trust in increasingly complex environments.

ROC’s foundation is deeply rooted in the research principles Dr. Jain has championed throughout his career. Beyond the several former graduate students who now work at ROC, CEO B. Scott Swann has collaborated with him for nearly two decades across government-funded research initiatives. Dr. Jain’s appointment to the Board formalizes this shared scientific legacy as ROC continues to advance connected identity intelligence across biometrics, video analytics, and digital evidence.

“Professor Jain taught me that research should do more than be scientifically interesting. It should begin with a problem that matters, withstand real-world scrutiny, and ultimately improve the lives of the people it is meant to serve. That principle shaped my doctoral work, helped inspire ROC, and continues to guide how we build today.”

A Foundation for Modern Biometrics

Modern biometric technology depends on more than the ability to capture a face or fingerprint. It requires the science to determine what makes a biometric signal distinctive, persistent, measurable, and operationally useful. This is where Dr. Jain’s work has had a lasting impact.

Pattern recognition, the discipline of identifying meaningful structure within complex data, has been central to his career. Through research spanning fingerprint recognition, face recognition, biometric individuality, template security, data clustering, and computer vision, Dr. Jain helped advance biometrics from a promising technology to a field grounded in rigorous evaluation and practical application.

His work addressed questions that sit at the heart of trustworthy identity systems:

  • What makes a fingerprint distinctive enough to support reliable identification?
  • Does biometric recognition remain stable over time?
  • How can biometric templates be protected without compromising performance?
  • How can algorithms find meaningful patterns at scale?

These questions continue to matter wherever organizations need to establish identity with confidence.

When Research Becomes Infrastructure

Foundational research becomes infrastructure when people can depend on it. Dr. Jain’s work helped move biometrics beyond the lab and into identity systems operating at scale. Today, biometric technology supports access to essential services, public safety, secure transactions, and more informed decisions. Each application depends on identity systems that can perform accurately, securely, and consistently. Dr. Jain helped establish that foundation and inspired generations of researchers to build upon it, including several working at ROC today.

“I’ve dedicated my career to computer science and engineering research in order to advance pattern recognition focused on solving real-world operational challenges. ROC’s mission to advance its biometric and identity intelligence is a natural extension of that work. I look forward to contributing my experience as the Company expands its technology capabilities, advances the ROC Vision AI platform and executes on its long-term growth strategy.”

A Research Lineage Embedded in ROC

At ROC, Dr. Jain’s influence is present in the people building, testing, and advancing the algorithms behind ROC’s platform. Beyond ROC Co-Founder and Chief Scientist Brendan Klare, four additional ROC team members studied under Dr. Jain at Michigan State University: Josh Engelsma, KP Patel, Steven Grosz, and Charles Otto. Together, they carry that research lineage into the technology and platforms ROC develops today. New capabilities must be scientifically defensible, operationally relevant, and built to perform outside controlled settings.

“Dr. Jain has helped define how modern biometric technology is built, measured, and put to use. I have had the privilege of working with Anil for nearly two decades and have seen firsthand the rigor and practical perspective that have made his work so influential. His expertise is strategically aligned with the fundamentals of our Vision AI platform and strengthens our resources to advance our multimodal biometrics, identity intelligence, and biometric security. His appointment reinforces ROC’s commitment to developing American-made technology cultivated through rigorous science and engineered for real-world operations.”

The Next Evolution: Connected Identity Intelligence

The same mandate that helped move biometrics from research to real-world infrastructure now points toward the next challenge: connecting identity across the systems and silos where decisions are made. Identity intelligence is not a single match or a single product. It is the ability to connect identity signals with live video, access events, and digital evidence, helping teams understand what they are seeing and decide what to do next.

  • ROC ABIS supports multimodal identification at scale across fingerprint, face, latent print, palm, iris, and tattoo workflows.
  • ROC Watch and ROC Access bring biometric identity and scene intelligence into live security, access control, and public safety environments.
  • ROC Enroll and ROC SDK strengthen identity signals at capture and embed advanced biometric capabilities into customer applications and workflows.
  • ROC Evidence connects digital evidence with identity and video intelligence throughout the investigative lifecycle.

Each product addresses a distinct operational need. Together, they help transform isolated identity signals into connected intelligence that supports faster, more informed decisions.

Five Decades Advancing the Science of Identity

Dr. Jain is a University Distinguished Professor at Michigan State University and one of the most highly cited researchers in computer science. During a career spanning more than five decades, he has authored hundreds of scientific papers and 15 books covering biometrics, face and fingerprint recognition, pattern recognition, and data clustering. His research has resulted in patents and technologies that have been licensed and deployed in operational environments around the world.

He has served as editor-in-chief of IEEE Transactions on Pattern Analysis and Machine Intelligence and contributed to expert panels for the U.S. National Academies, Defense Science Board, Forensic Science Standards Board, and AAAS Latent Fingerprint Working Group. Dr. Jain holds a Bachelor of Technology from the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur and master’s and doctoral degrees in electrical engineering from The Ohio State University.

As ROC continues to expand its Vision AI platform, Dr. Jain brings a perspective shaped by decades of scientific discovery, mentorship, and practical impact – and a shared belief that the strongest research ultimately proves its value in the field.
